Frogtown Races Regatta - September 24, 2011

By Mike Marenghi:

The Huron Crew team traveled to Ohio on Saturday to participate in the Toledo Rowing Club's 26th annual Frogtown Regatta. The Frogtown Regatta is one of the largest in the Midwest with 1200 rowers from forty-seven teams launching 323 boats in fifty-seven events. The competition at the high school level includes both scholastic teams, like Huron, Pioneer and Skyline, and club teams that pull from multiple high schools in a region.

The Huron team left Ann Arbor before 5:00am, and arrived in Toledo to find thick fog blanketing the Maumee River. Race organizers sent out the first group of senior rowers who were soon lost in the mist, prompting a nearly three hour delay in the start of racing.

When racing commenced, the Huron women's varsity eight boat was the first in the water, and proceeded to take first place in their race, beating eleven other boats from Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Michigan. The strong start for the River Rats continued with a third place finish for the men's novice eight, in a race with eighteen boats; followed by a third place finish for the women's four, in a race with thirty-three boats. Many other Huron boats did well in a very competitive field.

Horton Cup - September 17, 2011

By Mike Taft:

The River Rats opened their Fall 2011 Season Saturday morning by swamping the competition and winning the 8th annual Horton Cup Regatta held on Ford Lake. Under cloudy skies that gave way to bright sunshine and mild winds, the Rats won 7 of 10 races to take home the treasured Horton Cup against local rivals Pioneer, Skyline, Saline and Northville. The race was run in “head race” fashion as boats were sent off at 20-second intervals to row against the clock. The 4300-meter course ran across the lake, around an island and back, and required coxswains to negotiate a tricky double starboard turn. Every program performed well.

A young varsity boys team showed developing promise and energy as they finished second and eighth in the mens varsity eight race. The boys rowed strongly in the mens varsity four race as well, taking third place and tenth place.

A veteran varsity girls squad showed depth in placing first, fourth and eighth in the womens varsity eight, and first, third, sixth and eleventh in the varsity fours.

Both novice squads really excelled; this is a great sign for the future! The boys novice eights took first, second and sixth, while the novice boys fours took first and fifth. Intense competition between the two Huron novice fours led to a collision between them about two hundred meters from the finish. I guess it’s better to hit each other than to collide with another team…

The novice girls eight rowed twice and took first place in both races by solid margins, showing toughness and surprising strength.

Aside from Huron’s strong performance the heads-up award of the day goes to the Pioneer novice girl rower who caught an ejection crab and was tossed from her boat in the middle of the race. Undaunted, she clambered back in and finished the race.

Great rowing all around by Huron.
