Practice - Winter 2011 - 2012

Winter Conditioning will continue over the holiday break, same time, same place.  We will hold workout sessions Monday through Friday of the holiday week, February 20-24, at the school, from 5-6:30 each day.

This has been an excellent winter of work, and you deserve congratulations and appreciation.  Attendance has been steady at Coach Shelby's Tuesday-Thursday sessions, Coach B's strength sessions, and at the M-W-F general team sessions.  We have been seeing more familiar faces with February and the new academic semester, which is good!   Attendees are strong, pretty fit, and positive.

The official start of the spring season practices is Monday, March 12, just less than five weeks from now.  We would love to see every team member attend workouts prior to that date.  If you are a member of the varsity, you know the drill: we hope to see you at most, if not all, workouts.  If you have aspirations for a top-level boat, and we have some potentially very good boats, be there. This time really counts.  Your competition is doing the work; enough said.

The specific conditioning at the regular team sessions will gradually shift;  we will do more, and more intense erg pieces that focus on race endurance, intervals, and speed work, in addition to some steady state and a fair amount of technique correction.  Following on our excellent strength development of the previous three months (thanks Coach B and Shelby!) we will progress to activities that improve hip, lower back, hamstring, shoulder and overall rotational flexibility.  As usual, we will do more general circuits to address general aerobic conditioning.  Finally, we will maintain our newfound strength with continued weight work, but at lower weights and more repetitions.

If you plan on being out of town over the vacation, see me for suggestions for activities that can suit your trip.  If you are in town over the break, come to as many sessions as you can.  Let me know if you have questions.
