Fall Season Starts Monday, August 22nd!

Practices will run from 5:15-7:30 M-F, starting on Monday, August 22nd.

Note this a change from a previous post that said August 15th.

Important: All rowers, returning and new, need proof of physical dated after April 15, 2016. Don’t wait! You can get your physical done now.

Spring Crew Banquet is June 3rd!

Mark your calendars for the 2016 Spring Crew Banquet on June 3 at 6pm in the Huron High School cafeteria.  All rowers, coaches, families and supporters are invited to attend.  The dinner will be a potluck and we will celebrate the season with presentations by coaches, HRA board, coaches awards and more.

Each family should bring a dish to feed 16-20 people according to the list below.  If possible, please also bring the serving utensil your dish requires.
A-I  Side Dish

R-Z Salad
HRA will supply dessert, drinks, place settings, etc.

Register for Spring Crew Now–Orientation Meeting March 15th at 6:30pm

Well, there is still snow on the ground, but it is starting to feel like spring outside!  That means time for spring rowing season to start!!  We already have some people registered through HRA (thank you!).  Please make sure that you complete all the registration items shown on the “JOIN CREW” tab at huronrowing.org.  As many of you recall, there are registration requirements through the school as well as through HRA.  I have attached a checklist to help everyone make sure they have finalized all their paperwork.

The US Rowing waver website is a little different this year. The Huron Crew code remains the same – SD7DK
  1. To start, the website you need to go to is membership.usrowing.org.
  2. US Rowing has created a helpful youtube video to walk you through what you need to do.  https://youtu.be/VLT50U8WzUc.
  3. For people who have been on the team before, you will see that US Rowing now requires payment of a small administrative fee.  This will be good for the whole year.  Everyone on the team except for the people listed below (who currently have an active US Rowing waiver) needs to complete the US Rowing registration and waiver to be eligible to row for the team.  The people who have an active waiver (as of the time I am writing this on Monday morning) are:  Libby Reeves, Jack Panitch, Arthur Zhang, Niyati Kellenberg-Callewaert, and Makala Borg.   Everyone else needs to complete the waiver.

The Spring orientation is scheduled for 6:30 pm on Tuesday, March 15 in the little theater at Huron High School.  This is mandatory for all new rowers and parents and recommended for all rowers and parents.

If you are a new rower and have not yet completed your swim test, I recommend getting that completed this week.  We may have a way to do the test at the boathouse, but the water is likely to be quite cold for awhile, so a pool may be more palatable.

For new rowers (and returning rowers), we have a lot of volunteering options and I recommend signing up early and often.  We will go over these opportunities at the orientation and the powerpoint describing these will be on the website.  We are still looking for someone to help coordinate the millionaire parties and the art fair.  These are our two biggest fundraisers and a great way to get involved.  Look to your emails for messages about fundraising.

Last but not least, you will soon see order forms for uniforms.  We have different uniforms for varsity and novice teams and the details will be in the emails.  There will be a tight time turnaround on the uniform order forms, so keep an eye out!

Please contact me with any questions at all.  I look forward to seeing all the returning rowers and families and meeting all the new rowers and families!

Cleveland vs Ann Arbor Cayahoga River Challenge

This coming Saturday October 3rd,  we travel to Cleveland by team buses to row on the Cuyahoga River in downtown Cleveland vs. Saint Joseph Academy, Saint Edwards Academy, Shaker Heights, and of course our good friends Pioneer.   All students are expected to ride the team buses unless parents inform me they are driving and can commit to having the rower at the course on time with the others.  As a general planning guide, kids will be there around 8 AM, racing will start about 10 AM and finish up by 3 PM or so.  Following our trailer reloading the buses will return early Saturday evening.  All rowers need to be at the bus at Huron High School by 4:45 am.  The bus will be leaving at 5 am.
Click here for a link to the map of the Cleveland regatta site.  Travel time is about three hours.

Frogtown Regatta Saturday, September 26, 2015

All rowers need to be at the regatta by 6:30 am. Give yourself at least an hour travel time from Ann Arbor to the race site.

There is no bus for this regatta.  Rowers and families must coordinate their own transportation.  It is HRA policy (see the orientation handbook) that rowers should not drive themselves to regattas – days are long and rowers get very tired.  The current district policy is that when transportation is not provided, parents make the call and decide the best way to get their child to an away regatta.  Please make your travel/carpool plans ASAP.

Directions and Parking:
The main boathouse entrance is reserved for boat trailers only.  For reference, the address for the boathouse is 8 Main Street, Toledo, Ohio 43605 at the far end of the street where parking is).
From US-23 heading South from Ann Arbor, here are directions to parking:
1.  2-3 miles after crossing the Ohio-Michigan border, take exit 232 to merge onto I-475 East.
2.  Take Exit 20A for I-75 south
3.  Take Exit 199A for Miami St. and merge onto Miami St, heading east.
4.  Turn left onto Boers-Boyer Way (the left is just after the  “The Docks” sign).
5.  Follow road to regatta location – follow signs to trailer and car parking.
The first Huron event starts at 8:30 am and the last races are expected to begin at 3:00 pm.  4:30 is a very rough estimate of when the rowers will be done and ready to leave.  Please note the day may take longer due to weather or other events.

Saturday September 5: Intra-Squad Scrimmage

We will gather at Argo in the morning for a brief scrimmage against ourselves. This is a short session designed to have varsity boats at race pressure and moderate rates.

Rowers should report at 8 am, and we will be complete by 11 am.

We are not racing any other clubs. Please eat something before you arrive, as there will be no regatta support for this practice event. No team uni’s are necessary: wear what is comfortable. Bring water.

NOTE: varsity and select novice rowers only!! If you are a novice, your coach will inform you if you should/may attend: novices will row hard for 1500m non-stop, and only novices who have been able to attend most practices and demonstrate sufficient proficiency rowing all 8 as a full boat will row this.

We understand this is Labor Day Weekend and some of you will be out of town or unable to attend. No problem. If you are here, please attend. If you are unable to attend, please let your coach know.

There will be no crew practice on Monday September 7, in honor of the Labor Day holiday.

Fall Orientation

Please join us at the boathouse TODAY, September 1st for our Fall Orientation. Plan to arrive around 6:15pm. Parking may be tight around the boathouse, so please consider using the north parking lot for Bandemer Park off of Barton Drive.

Members of the HRA Board will present information about the organization starting around 6:30pm. Following that, head coach Mike Taft will talk about the team itself as well as what to expect this season. Finally, food will be served by Regatta Support for families starting around 7:00pm, as well as for rowers after they finish practice.

Please bring your own chairs as the park has very little seating.
